In 2005, ‘Broken' was one of my first experiments as a dnb producer in slowing down the tempo to fit a new musical idea instead of changing the idea to fit the tempo.
As an experiment, I 'fixed' the track to play it at Rupture at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, a drum 'n bass night. Surprisingly the piece immediately took on the guise of a halfstep DNB track. It felt like the idea I had way back when had returned to its original home, living with family members it hadn’t seen for 20 years.
Experimenting with tempos and space remains a big part of what I do musically to this day. To continuously practice attributing these qualities to your personal sound is to perpetuate the through line and that’s what makes writing music and playing it so fulfilling and important to me.
