Built from elements of traditional orchestration, sequenced electronics, and field recordings, composer Jonathan Snipes brings an experimental approach to one of his biggest projects yet. The resulting combination, for the Spotify audio series Batman Unburied, captures not only the bleak moodiness and massive scale one would expect for the Dark Knight, but also mirrors the hypnotic hallucination of the narrative through structural techniques.

Utilizing cassette tape loops, the sense of being stuck in the past and buried behind layers of history is brought to life through Snipes' score. The hiss and noise of these magnetic loops is paired with cavernous drums, moving between ambient descents and synth driven summits. Interwoven throughout are literal recordings of bats made by scientist Ethan Gilardi, vocalizations from opera singer Micaela Tobin, wind instruments performed by Max Kaplan and Louis Lopez, and metal-tinged guitar from David Rothbaum. Jonathan Snipes' score for Batman Unburied is not merely ambitious, it succeeds in crafting a distinctly contemporary Gotham City sound.

Jonathan Snipes has scored films such as Room 237 and Starry Eyes and shows like House of Ninjas. He also is a member of the hip hop trio Clipping. on Sub Pop.

In the Spotify audio series Batman Unburied, a serial killer terrorizes Gotham, but Batman is not coming to the rescue. In fact, Bruce Wayne has no memory of being Batman at all. To find out why, Barbara Gordon will need to seek help from Gotham’s second smartest detective: The Riddler. But the villain’s got plans of his own. And to save the people he loves, Bruce will need to escape a hell of his own creation – and confront the mysterious foe who put him there.
