‘Friends Don't Break Up’ is about a friendship that drifted apart without ever officially ending: Carried by atmospheric synthesizers and a pulsating bass drum, the lyrics say: "Friends don't break up, but they can break each other's hearts" – friendship is treated here as an emotional relationship just as formative as romantic love.
