‘fiberglass glistened like frost’, the debut full length LP under Tucson artist and producer Dominic Valencia’s mmra moniker, is a shapeshifting electronic confrontation — one between past and future — secret and known — faith and evidence — sound and person.
Informed by adolescent experience with severe familial mental illness and its subsequent effects, ‘fiberglass’ sees Valencia consider notions of strength and dangerous cycles of generational trauma, lacing two decades of personal field and home recordings with mutating sub-aquatic electronic instrumentation, hard stippled percussion, and damaged strands of his own voice. These interweavings, intricately composed yet never content to rest in one place for long, continually pile upon and consume themselves as if they feel an unrelenting pull to break from their own bodies.
At once hauntingly brutal, gently compassionate, and deeply vulnerable, ‘fiberglass glistened like frost’ is unafraid to scrape at the complex textures of lived experience, exposing its dense emotional foundation while still keeping its head high to tomorrow.
