Moon Over Swamp (MoS) is a brand new project from singer/songwriter Rojnita Shyangden (aka Nindramaya) and producer/sound designer Auryn Waring (aka Shinamo Moki, Tolari). Rojnita who is originally from Nepal, is currently based in New York while Auryn is based both in London and Shanghai. The duo formed in 2020 and have made their EP solely through email and sharing demos.
The EP is a self titled concept album with lyrics mostly written in Rojnita's native language of Nepali. A deliberate choice to retroactively insert a piece of her identity into the music she grew up hearing, which was mostly western pop and R&B songs from the 90's and 2000's. For Auryn, it’s a reflection of APD (audio processing disorder), not being able to discern lyrics and instead just focusing onvocals for it’s qualities as a musical instrument.
A cathartic farewell to the turbulent and formative, yet tender moments of a high school romance with each track representing its own part of the EP’s story. The interlude track 'Classroom Sunset' in particular sets an almost movie-like scene with dialogue from the 2002 Taiwanese movie 'Blue Gate Crossing' where a teenager makes a daring confession as she comes to terms with her own sexuality. Ultimately it's a homage to hazy teen memories and sunsets that you gloss over at the time but remember for the rest of your life.
