This song means quite a bit to me. There’s been countless versions, countless hours so I’m very excited to sharing this one. I really set out to unpack how I feel about nostalgia.
I feel like we live in an over nostalgic time. It’s always been an issue, but it feels heightened. The internet in someways is a Time Machine; with a quick YouTube search you can find yourself anywhere over the last 100 years. On the artist side, this leads to blatant rips instead of making something new out of whatever haze we can gather from our early childhood. This mixed in with late-stage capitalism’s unrelenting demand for profits, kills the risk tasking and artist development that lead us to where we are.
Additionally art does not live in a vaccuum. When we recycle, we sanitize. This often strip art/fashion/music of its political leanings removing the hardships of those before us. A context which is vital for creating a better future. I feel strongly that gen z & younger cannot repeat this cycle as the climate crisis looms. “Frog in Water” is a spin on the old adage about boiling frogs. Those of us in the colder climates have gotten a taste, but by the time we are truly effected we’ll be cooked.
