“I refuse resignations, boredom, anger, and justifications.” These lyrics to the EP’s title track embody Montreal artist Sophie Ogilvie’s approach to songwriting, as she insists on representing relational dynamics in their troubling complexity. Over four songs Ogilvie shifts between multiple roles: observer, confidante, conspirator, comforter. “Resignations” depicts a stifling romance that impinges on the creative life of both parties; “Obligation” follows the social expectations of parents on their young daughter; “Paintings” coaxes a withdrawn artist to share their work with the public; and finally “Rest” beckons listeners to leave behind the stresses of the day in favour of sleep.
