I found Mod Cog on YouTube. Their music is an exercise in DAW-less electronic improvisation shared with the world via YouTube videos that capture their process and collection of odd machines.
I love odd machines, so I sent them 'Old Dreams' and 'Hiddenness' and said “if you ever fancy remixing these then feel free!”. A day later their remix of Hiddenness was in my inbox.
The main thing here is the tape machine. It’s a transcribing machine that allows typists to speed up or slow down recordings of meetings for typing up. But it’s got a pitch control so that voices don’t go to low rumbles when slowed or high chipmunks when speeded up. That’s what they've done to the piano...slowed it down and put it back up to correct pitch, and thereby removing it from space and time.
Add some other celestial magic with their other boxes of tricks and what you get is like a dusty memory of the original pieces, putting them even more out of time than they feel to me when I play them.
