Ambient music evokes a feeling of endlessness. As if the piece has been playing for an unknowable period of time before the song begins and will continue on into the ether once it fades out of our speakers.
This same feeling occurs when you peek into a hive and see the inner workings of a honeybee colony. You’re witnessing a moment, a snapshot of something much larger unfolding around us all the time; literally keeping life as we know it in balance.
The Soft Vibrations experiment bridges the expanding gap between man and nature by capturing a tiny segment of each of these endlessnesses occurring at once, as one.
By equipping a hive with pressure sensors that communicate the movements and vibrations of the colony to a custom-built device; Acid Springfield’s Model B modulator, we’ve enabled the bees themselves to compose extremely intricate ambient soundscapes or complex pieces of musique concrète.
Once assigned to modulate a range of sources on a synthesizer, you will quickly hear the signal path become quite involved; often to an uncontrollable point.
