“Grand Trine,” the first single from composer Tashi Wada’s new album What Is Not Strange?, takes its name from an astrological configuration of planets forming an equilateral triangle, present in his then-newborn daughter’s chart. Fittingly, the six-minute piece is maximalist and celebratory with Wada’s shimmering, retuned harpsichord sound elevated by Julia Holter’s soaring vocals, Ezra Buchla and Devin Hoff’s quicksilver strings, and Corey Fogel’s lurching, powerful drums. The overall effect conjures what feels like interplanetary court music, an ambitious paean to the cycles of life.
