On Troubleshooting released via RLRL in May 9th, 2014

The title was inspired by Papadatos’ parallel work as a visual artist, art director and graphic designer and was in fact an intended tongue-in-cheek pun, towards all the jobs he finalized but never got paid for.

In The Metaphysical Animal, Papadatos presents a thick yet smooth layer of modular synthesizer produced sounds, that reminisces a frozen crust, still and unmoved, while below it a rapid movement takes place. This oxymoron, signifies Papadatos’ sound where the use of plunderphonics and field recordings, running simultaneously, lead to a slow but concrete build up.

In Give Me Another Universe the approach is much more rhythmical and surprising as the use of turntables is extensively apparent. What starts as a cut-up of various sources, such as old opera recordings, Jack Holzman’s sound effects, old cool jazz records percussion sounds and more, climaxes for seconds, only to be replaced by a captivating drone. The voice of a muezzin drawn directly from a reel-to-reel tape, resonates with the drone produced by the modular synthesizer and leads the composition to a poignant end.

Written, produced and performed by Dimitris Papadatos.

Recorded live in one afternoon at Acacia Studios, Athens Greece, 2014.
Mastered by Martijn Comes at Immovable Substance.
Artwork and design by Corinna Triantafyllidis.
