On June 7, 2023 New York City experienced the worst air pollution on record caused by wildfires to the North in Quebec, Canada. The day began in the “red” with AQIs in the 151-200 range. Anything above 100 is considered unhealthy, while above 300 is “hazardous,” the index’s worst possible rating. Within 24 hours the AQI reached 460.

Wild Life was created using a combination of field recordings and synthesis during this period. Track 10 uses field recordings from New York City’s Times Square. Experiencing the AQI at 167 first hand, the number was used as a marker for filtering out all sound except for 167 Hz. Humans can detect sound in a frequency range of around 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
