True Fetish was a recording project with an array of different musicians and singers. Their first single Believe with L.A. based singer Emily, showcased a sonic palette channeling Brian Wilson's melancholy through drum machines and samples who could be on part on Broadcast's Tender Buttons. From here they started to expand their musical vocabulary, collaborating with different singers. From their own acknowledgment, the female voice is central to their recording process, grounding the songwriting ingenuity of Icon in Tokyo unto heartfelt moments of sheer bluesiness. This particular record was made of live takes, all recorded in one afternoon around 2018, with a new singer Audrey they just met in the studio. This spontaneous process is really a trademark of True Fetish's recordings, collaborations on the spot, a recording process which relies heavily on one takes and improvisation. Tyrol their second effort introduced a male voice for the first time on opener White Magic, Dimitri lends his gravely voice and is soon joined on Ramadan and Boumkoeur by french R'n'B singer Amel. This second record closes with a remix by Bademjan of their first single Believe, and leans toward a more electronic approach to their sound. This band managed to mix and fuse so many influences that you would think it would only result in a bland mismatch of styles, but here is sure more than the sum of their parts, they did managed to transcend them unto something of their own.
The first EP by True Fetish with Audrey Danet as the lead singer. Those raw recordings evoke Broadcast, Stereolab, Beat Happening and Nico’s albums. Something very European in their sound, recorded live in 2019 and improvised on the spot. The live session ended with the four musicians eating a couscous together.
