Following “cosa rara (feat. David Sylvian)” and “divina,” the first two previews from her new album A Danger to Ourselves, Lucrecia Dalt shared “caes,” her collaboration with the Mexican musician Camille Mandoki, last month. The song takes a new direction today, projecting it toward the dance floor, with a dub version from Miami-based musician and produced Nick León.
In León’s rework, the stark, weight-bearing percussive elements of the original hypnotically pulse and then swing while Dalt and Mandoki’s vocals take abstract form and function. "When I made 'caes', I wanted to evoke a slowed, faded dembow—something punchy but melodic, with a timeless, almost ancient feel, says Dalt. “I knew Nick would totally get the layers behind ‘caes’, and that he would transform it into something cool, fun, and capable of existing in its own world."
“Lucrecia is such an inspiration; I’ve always appreciated her style and sense of sound,” says León. "I was honored when she asked me to remix a song with Camille Mandoki. It’s funny; all three of us met at Red Bully Music Academy in 2018 in Berlin, so this feels very full circle.”
