SLACK 1NE is back in the building with a solo project for Sonora Destroy Recs' second release. After his gallant participation in the imprint’s first VA—Hybrid Pulse—the junglist revivalist has put together his "hardest project to date." Attempting to master the art of breakbeat manipulation as a tribute to the Jungle creators, the Perth-born, Naarm-based artist excels in classic sounds while adding his own modern interpretation.
Decoded is a fully packed 4-track EP (plus an intro cut) that you can stream non-stop from start to finish, serving up an immersive experience that will pull you deep into the EP's imaginary realm. “The idea behind this was to create a long form version of the EP that would encourage the listener to play it in its entirety. I grew up in a time where we would play the CD from start to finish and things like interludes have been lost in the current era where songs and attention spans are getting shorter simultaneously”, as SLACK 1NE puts it.
With a hefty dose of jungle acceleration, the opening cut sets the mood for ‘Original Style’, which builds up from modern deconstructed sounds to classic jungle breaks, wrapping up with a mind-expanding exploration. ‘Warning’, 1NE’s favourite, exploits a vocal sample from an Ice-T skit on his ‘Power’ album, making it the track’s driving force. Meanwhile, ‘Plot Twist’ pays homage to that 90s sound we all crave. Last up, beefed up with rough-cut percussion and tripped-out sci-fi sounds winks, ‘Badman Meeting’ seals the EP with a mysterious and empowering vibe.
Building on his early rap years and versatile production skills, and aiming to bring a fresh and original take on the well-known jungle-break format, SLACK 1NE’s ultimate mission is to ‘inspire people to dance.’ Decoded drops on October 1st.
