Rain Gregorio - Do Your Business
Following up on 2023’s Myrtle on Holiday, Rain Gregorio’s new EP ”Do Your Business” confidently marks his fourth release on the Los Angeles-based tastemaking outfit, Anxiety Blanket Records, and his second collaboration with producer Jon Joseph.
The taut production flair of Do Your Business succeeds Gregorio’s previous offerings on Anxiety Blanket: the kaleidoscopic EP World Behind Your Head from 2021 and his raw, 2022 full-length Rolling Off the Tongue. Also known in the LA DIY scene for his melodic contributions in the indie
pop project Nebulamigo, or the muscular riff work of Spirit Dive, Gregorio returns with a solo collection of indie rock songs rooted in the same colorful eclecticism as artists John Martyn or
Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox, combining thoughtful, intricate arrangements with textures in panorama.
Recorded in Joseph’s San Pedro studio, Do Your Business features Gregorio’s sharpest songwriting to date. Dry Shampoo, as Gregorio puts it, is “a paean to anti-depressants” with deft rhythmic stylings propelling the listener through a liminal space nested in between doses of medication. Foggy Stepper, released in 2024 as a single, unfurls a picaresque of a broken
friendship with nimble guitar-play atop atmospheric synths and a half-time garage beat. But the lead singles, Love the Gaze and Nora Jonestown Massacre, best showcase Gregorio’s instinct for emotive, power-pop hooks. The former, driven by its soaring chorus, reflects on the highs and lows of a drunken night with a winking croon, and the latter recalls the subdued force of early-era Interpol, rollicking ahead with a slow-building wall of sound.
