This EP is a warmer turn away from my storybook gothic animated universe from my previous record. In November I began a weekly comic strip called “Surreally Good Friends.” It draws from my experience animating for artists like Weyes Blood, Jose Gonzales, Sharon Van Etten, and of course my own music videos, to inhabit the world of Grimsøn with characters and new shades of personality, darkness and humor.
To promote this new EP, I have created character storylines that intertwine with the lyrics and attitude of the songs. This is most evident in “Definite Yes,” which follows the story of Feather (a half slug half brick character) and Cindy (half snail half cement mixer). Each panel of the comic illustrates a verse from the song - all hand drawn by myself, and shared on instagram and tiktok. Another instance is “What Can I Keep?” which extrapolates the distance of a relationship into a metaphor about moving house, which was anticipated in the comics leading up to the song’s release.
I will be shipping free zines of all of the comics thus far with purchases of the EP on Bandcamp.
You can see the comics here on bandcamp or instagram.
I am inspired by comic illustrators like R Crumb and more recently, Sean Soloman - another musician who incorporates a strong multimedia element into his work.
