Three eclipses, three cities—regional ghosts rendered as noise, samples, texture, and synthesis.
When the Sun is Eaten (Chi’bal K’iin) is a film by acclaimed artist Kevin Jerome Everson, featuring the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse, captured over the skies of Cleveland, Ohio, Carbondale, Illinois and Mazatlán, Mexico. The film premiered in the Forum Expanded section at the Berlinale in February 2025.
Composer David Dominique created an ambient-noise soundtrack using samples from regional artists, processed into immersive textures through granular synthesis. Though unrecognizable, the sounds retain sonic traces of place, anchoring each eclipse shot in a ghostly musical geography.
