Taba, the new album from Japanese musician, songwriter and inner / outer world traveller Satomimagae, unfolds as a series of vignettes that document both the personal and the universal, seen and unseen. Observing and absorbing the fleeting scenes and sounds of life flowing outside of her home studio, Satomi sings beyond herself, in an orbit of souls and systems both in the present and in the strange flux of memory, leaving linear songwriting to rest for circuitous stories expanded and expansive in tone and texture.
“Many” the lead single from Taba is folk music for an alienated age and marks a subtle yet purposeful shift towards more organic song craft and arrangements that highlight and incorporate the natural resonance of the world around Satomi. Guided by musings on unnoticed lives and collective memories, and delicately tracing the connective tissues that bind and unbind individuals and groups, “Many” finds Satomi thinking in loops and spirals against an ether of indistinct echoes and nebulous sonic gestures, barely there, yet fully felt.
