Colin Self is a sage presence of the queer underground, recognized and respected for cultivating intentional community outside the purview of those powers that long for eradication of the fringe entirely.
On “gajo” b/w “Doll Park Doll Park,” the latest offering from their forthcoming album respite ∞ levity for the nameless ghost in crisis, aka r∞L4nGc, they dig deeper inwards, making dance music indebted not simply to contemporary queer nightlife, but to a longer lineage of departed elders that remain vital in this realm and the afterlife.
“gajo” is the more vocal-centric of the double A-side single, as Self sings to their companions to create a diversion, escaping danger once more while seeking a moment of grace, the message beamed across a stutter-step beat. Meanwhile, “Doll Park Doll Park” is dance music as manipulated by a marionette’s helter-skelter string sequence, bodies called on by a higher power to move.
