Wolfgang Pérez is a half-German, half-Spanish songwriter, arranger, and guitarist from Essen.
His eclectic debut album WHO CARES WHO CARES was released in 2021 via Fun In The Church. This album was brought to life on stage with his septet, including performances at the Cologne Philharmonic and Waves Vienna Festival.
His Spanish-language follow-up, AHORA, was released in 2024 on BAUMUSIK, marking a new chapter that took him and his live-band to the renowned Moers Festival. The album pushes the boundaries of pop, chamber music, and free jazz, offering a deep, experimental exploration of Spanish song tradition.
In between these releases, Pérez spent a year and a half in Rio de Janeiro, a period that profoundly influenced his artistic direction. The fruits of his time in Rio, and his love letter to Brazilian musical culture, is the beautiful Só Ouço, an album Hive Mind are thrilled to be releasing this summer.
However before we get to that, we'd love to present you with this wonderful gift from Wolfgang, a beautifully mournful EP of electronically manipulated sounds from his family archive. These deeply personal pieces all begin with a selection of 1982 recordings of Wolfgang's Spanish family singing and playing music in a church in Segovia, Spain, captured by his grandfather Fernando using a shitty tape recorder. Wolfgang has taken the recordings and chopped and screwed them to produce a haunting EP of melancholy and otherworldly ambience.
