DJ HeadSick is a project by Nikolai Dolgov (Пайта, Проделки Больной Головы), based on his love for synthesizer music and sound experiments. He himself describes the project as a subtle mental state experienced during sleepless nights.
His new full-length release Mashusa Tape Dreams is a declaration of love to Nikolai’s muse — Mashusa. This confession exists not only on the level of meaning, but also on the level of production: Mashusa, being a tape DJ, sets the album’s direction for Kolya, encourages the use of cassette samples and loops, and the choice of cassette as a physical format becomes conceptually justified.
Musically, the album is rich in ambient, ritual rhythmic patterns, dub (the musical foundation of Kolya as an author), references to White Noise (Love Without Sound) and classic IDM, while side B is a recording of a jam that was played as a lullaby.
Mashusa Tape Dreams is an oxytocin vision, a naïve perception of reality and of another person’s thoughts through music. It's a chase and attempts to guess. It's love.
