This week, DJ Haram will release her fantastic debut full-length, Beside Myself. To celebrate, we asked her about some of her personal Best Songs for hyper-specific situations. The Jersey-raised, Brooklyn-based artist has a multifaceted history with music, which makes itself readily apparent in her output, which fuses influences from rap, Middle Eastern music, punk, Jersey Club, and beyond. Best song to play so loud that the speakers start to distort?

“Bless Grips” by 700 Bliss

It’s some of my best work with bass sound design, definitely deserves a dangerously loud listen and the extra distortion.

Best song by a Jersey Club producer?

“Darling Come Here” by Mike Gip

A crazy, eerie minimalist and banging track sampling a dangerously horny Lords of Acid track.

Best song that makes you think about high school?

“Everytime We Touch” by Cascada

Looks at you in New Jersey.

Best song to peak a DJ set?

“Mirage” by Slikback x Mapalma

Everybody knows I love edging on a jumpscare at peak moments. It’s not always appropriate, but I’m gonna try if I think it’ll go off.

Best song that your parents introduced you to as a child?

“Misket” by Esin Engin ve Orkestrası

Honestly don’t know what the original version I first heard was. Timeless old head tune.

Best song by a 1990s or 2000s noise band?

“Dead Cowboy” by Lightning Bolt

I was quite into noise rock for some formative years. I remember being in high school watching videos of their live shows enthralled, like—what is going on?

Best song by a Memphis rap artist?

“I Faked It Last Night” by Gangsta Boo

RIP to Gangsta Boo, one of the best to ever do it. The beat on this track is as incredible as her performance, instigating bucking at every bar.

Best song to play at a wedding? 

“F TRUMP” by Mighty Mark and TT The Artist

Alienate any in-laws that may be on some fascist apologism on day one.

Best song that makes you sad?

“Therapy” by Ronnie Vega

Rest in power to the late, great, riotous Ronnie Vega, a good friend of mine. Sad because I miss him and it’s hard to hear about the mental health struggles of a friend when they’re gone, but also his music still goes really hard and gets me riled up.

Best song that makes you happy?

“I Keep a Mirror in My Pocket” by Armand Hammer (Feat. Cavalier)

Just an upbeat, well written and well designed collaborative composition. Cavalier’s ease makes me smile, ELUCID and woods have me laughing, and Preservation is my favorite fellow Armand Hammer producers.
