Earlier this year, the New York-based Cindy Lou came out with Mood Ring, a release showcasing the artist’s interest in opposing production styles, from more electronic dance-based cuts to the alternative sound we hear on this new single. “Pinker” is a bedroom pop-rock lullaby about being lonely at your house. Perhaps Cindy Lou is using this song to quiet the voice of a specific kind of ghost—that of a former confidant. It’s a voice that can emerge when you’ve spent too much time hanging out by yourself at home, attempting to make peace with the enveloping quietude. About halfway through, the song picks up pace, and the words—that, up until this point, have nearly been slurring into each other—are now sung more adamantly, if only slightly. It’s perhaps indicative of someone who is done wallowing and is now ready to let go.
