Considering the band shares their name with a firearm manufacturer, Zastava sounds surprisingly palatable. Sure, most songs on their debut full-length Buildings are standard post-punk fare—driving and jagged, with the voice as a percussive instrument—but the Detroit four-piece sets themselves apart with an inflection that bypasses indifference and sonic landscapes that remain atmospheric in their relative simplicity. It’s an intense record overall, but they know how to get quiet when it counts. “68” features a gorgeous viola performance. User “Lord-Fowls-Curse” likened them to “a harder-edged, post-punky Strokes” on the popular message board r/indieheads. You don’t have to be a Redditor to decide if that’s an apt description—just press play.
