Producer and longtime Nina friend Ted Davis is back with an EP of gauzy, ambient-leaning dance music under the DJ STEPDAD alias. Though previous releases from the producer have been focused more on the “ambient” side of the equation, the music on mike—it should be noted that every track on this EP has a name attached to it—has a bit of velocity to it, in that sort of sunrise-at-the-warehouse kind of way. “corey” sports sprightly Balearic pianos; “dan” has octave basslines and gestures, in some small manner, towards progressive house. “colin” brings it home in a chugging, anthemic fashion. Everything here has a tape-slathered patina and a homespun rhythmic sensibility. It’s nice, woozy listening gear—perfect for either the beginning or end of your session.
