A far cry from the region’s surf and psych scenes, Melbourne’s Garage Sale brings an emo twist to Aussie alt-rock. Or maybe it’s an easygoing Australian twist to emo. There’s less despair and self-loathing, more lackadaisical execution. “Punching Up,” off their upcoming album Any Day Now, is lo-fi and feedback heavy with enigmatic polish. It takes an angular melodic quality and softens it, indie-style, with half-timed fluttery riffs, a sandpapery chorus, and pockets of warped dissonance. You can’t help but hum along to the singer’s melismatic stretches of syllables, where a long “up” rhymes with a short “up” seamlessly. The band’s presence is strong without an exhausting weight; shoegazy without navel-gazing.
