If we can’t colonize Mars, can we colonize Planet Ren? Hello!, the new EP from Ren G, is flashy, flirty, and fabulous. Executive produced by Danish artist The Bird, these five selects are true to form, but less kitschy than her earlier work with her duo Club Eat. The EP is still built on glimmers of a MySpace scene queen upbringing, but this music doesn’t read as Warped Tour as before. “Forever” is sexed up but played straight; it turns hedonistic party fare into a doomsday prepper’s siren song. Closer “Little Lies” draws on 90s eurodance, weightless and a little melancholic. It samples the spoken section of Britney’s “Oops!... I Did It Again” bridge, a nod to the fictitious Heart of the Ocean diamond from the 1997 film Titanic. Most modern Top 40 stars have personal brands that read more like alter egos, but Ren G lives and breathes this life. She’s the people’s pop star—other indie darlings should take note and make more grand stylistic swings.
