The Swedish producer Mod Sens made the entirety of Misperception, his new EP on PROGRAMM LDN, during a period in Malmö's electronic music underground when electro was dominating the dancefloor. You can hear that influence throughout the release, though it is cut with a heavy dose of skanking, UK-leaning musical choices. Analog synth squiggles are present, but so are dubstep pockets and Amen breaks. The EP’s title track sounds like the midpoint between Detroit electro bass and early 8-bar grime. Here, Mod Sens uses his outsider positionality as an asset, not a liability.
