Has anyone seen those videos of Mayor Eric Adams saying that New York City is the insert here of America, doing a Mad Libs swap with whatever city he’s currently in? That’s how people talk about Chapel Hill in the 90s. It’s apparently the Athens, Dayton, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Seattle of North Carolina. Superchunk helped shape the sound of the town, and they deserve credit for promoting it. The Southern Part of Heaven might be your favorite band’s favorite city.
“Hyper Enough” is proto 90s emo indie rock, an anthemic take on anxious punk. It’s droll, but also neurotic and endearing. The bridge features the sage line “I was not weak but the drink was strong.” Mac McCaughan’s nasally yelp juxtaposes with the instrumental’s slamming, snare-driven mania. Despite never breaking out of the college market, it has a radio-friendly sheen that blinds from the brattiness.
