On her newest single, “COMET,” the artist and producer Ushko deploys an almost liturgical singing shape over banging trance music. There is something almost Eastern Orthodox about her vocals, which doesn’t not make sense, considering her background: the Russia-born, London-based artist studied music for over a decade, even singing in the United Choir of Russia. To my dumb ears, it’s sometimes unclear what language she is singing in—one previous song, according to an interview with the artist, melded English, Spanish, and Italian—which only adds to the transcendent, ceremonial vibe of the tune. Flip the record over to the digital B-side, “REMAINS,” and you get more spirited singing, this time over slower breakbeats.
