"As If An Ocean" is Berlin based producer's Skwirl's ambient project Shīdo's deep extended ambient exploration of the hypnagogic state of deep meditation.
Written and recorded in 2013 to accompany a dear friend who was cooped up in hospital due to complications of an autoimmune disease. This piece was born of a desire to make something special out of love and care - and that expression became a near 40 minute journey inwards and outwards.
Inwards: the first half is an ever shifting bed of granular synthesis layered carefully to lull the mind into an entranced state. The grains dance around like synapses and keep a subtle motion ebbing and flowing through the drone scape. Echoes of voices swim in and out as so many errant thoughts - melting away in an attempt to allow the listener to let go of these thoughts as the echoes themselves disappear underwater and into the abyss.
Outwards: around the half way mark a gentle rhythm begins weaving its way through the dense cloud of atmospherics - a tacit call to the brain to be aware that higher energy states are to come. Along with a slow assembling minimal deep house groove comes the voice of a meditation guide both encouraging and praising the listener for taking the time to care for the self and breathe.
The B side "Naeco Na Fi Sa" was conceived for a cassette edition that never materialised and is the main piece backwards: delighting the mind with the subtle twists of the material as it slowly creeps back toward the beginning. This was to make the tape a palindrome so as you played the second side you'd hear the piece backward as the tape in essence rewinds the side A.
Woodland Creatures is excited to present "As If An Ocean" as the start of a periodic series of archival releases of old Mr. Squirrel (Skwirl's original moniker during the '00s and early '10s) and Shīdo tunes, lovingly remastered and shadow dropped without prior announcement.
