"Act I: Garden" marks the entry into the mythic world of Tristan Allen’s new album Osni the Flare. The song starts in a hush, intimate and wispy, before opening into more complex sound design—textures scattering like wind pickup, pulling toward a full form. Allen built the track from flutes recorded note by note: Balinese Sulings, Chinese souvenir shop finds, bird and turtle-shaped ocarinas, train whistles. Music boxes wound slowly were sampled and rearranged to double the vocal melody. A dying Casio SK-1 with a blown-out speaker is paired with a harmonium to form chordal texture. Virginia Garcia Ruiz's wordless humming hovers between incantation and wavering thought. What begins as simple and childlike expands into something stranger and less stable, moving listeners from the known into Allen's fantastical world.
