In “No avatar,” Frances Chang finds a paradoxical swaggering confidence in the dissolution of her self image. “No, I won’t take a photo,” she tells us as the song begins, “just walking around with no avatar.” Rejecting outward depictions of the self, she slips into a more intuitive mode. “No avatar,” Chang says, is about “letting yourself be guided by libido (the psychoanalytic kind, which includes the quotidian kind). And also embracing your dark nights.” A kind of love song to the shadow self, it posits a deeper inquiry into the mysteries of the subconscious that Chang seems wistfully ready to lead us through.
