The second single from the acclaimed band Horse Lords’ new album Demand to Be Taken to Heaven Alive!, “First Galactic Utopia” plays with taffy-like delayed guitars and a loping, dry and scuzzy beat, anchored by fuzz bass and a Kuwaiti mirwas (hand drum), its distorted, gristly refrain a hallmark of the sawt music that has worked itself into the band’s broader palette. The rhythm section is palpably locked-in, an immovable bassline is the root around which psychedelic fields of synthesized elements rotate, a brief passage of expansive electronic filaments closing out this curious, ass-shaking nugget of experimental transcendence.
