“Intarsia” opens with what might be a cello, the friction of the bow on the strings heightened into the realm of the synthetic. The voice of Romanian composer Ioana Șelaru echoes off the body of the instrument in reams of overtone and the arrangement deepens as melodies fill the silence between figures. As Șelaru’s violin eventually enters alongside stacks of instruments double and mimicking each other, tonal sources become unclear: any of them may be virtual, may be real, or may be one fed into another, rearticulated in an adjacent textural vocabulary. A close listen reveals this interplay, but the immediate effect of the piece is one of emotional heft.
