Alexandra Python's EP, Places I Go, is archaically avant-garde. Although the British artist claims she “has no imagination whatsoever,” her impressionism is iridescent. Opening with the vulnerable and reverberant organ piece “Organized,” the EP then goes into “Souvenir,” which is one of the best songs of all time. But Python didn’t write it—it’s an echoey take on “Here’s Where The Story Ends” by The Sundays, forgoing Smiths-style jangly guitar for offbeat sharp strums and digital sound processing. Beyond the EP’s acoustic core, electronic experimentation has a strong presence. The haunting and circuslike “The Rooms” mixes indietronica pulse and dubstep wobble. “Never Said It Before Ever” adds breakbeats to cinematic ambient noise. Python lacks the pretension found in plenty of experimental pop; she melds her influences into something intimate.
