The Netherlands-based producer and DJ gyrofield makes electronic music that seems to operate within its own lane entirely. Though the artist, who was born in Hong Kong and has spent time in Bristol, first gained notoriety in 2019 as a drum and bass producer, she has touched too many genres to list out here. Found it playing in the background of a Japanese Minecraft playthrough. Such an elevating tune across all the elements—the piano solo particularly grew into an earworm, and I wasn't even making music back then!

Best song to listen to when you want to be alone?

"Hoppípolla" by Sigur Rós 

Joyful music really plays with my introverted nature, it's brimming so fully with light that I can reclaim peace and personal space amongst a crowd, but also enjoy something beautiful, like it's a little secret.

Best song by a contemporary drum and bass producer?

"Sharpest Edges (Visages Bootleg)" by Gallant

A moody, sensual take on a peppy, fervent R&B jam. I found this tune in a time of immense passion, and it was liberating to let go of the serious nature of drum and bass, to be tantalised by this tune like if it was a slow jam.

Best song by an old-school drum and bass producer?

"Global Decay" by Nucleus & Paradox

Love when new permutations still arise from musical legacies. There are of course artists who moved even further leftfield from drum & bass beginnings, but Paradox fits the bill nicely, of someone whose productions have remained singular since day dot.

Best song to listen to when you are waiting for takeaway food?

"Chicken Garaage" by Objekt 

At the time of writing this I am sick with a cold and also have chicken karaage on the way. :)

Best song by a friend?

"Monsoon Season" by Tim Reaper 

I pick this one out of Ed's endless discography because it was released on another great friend, Nectax's label. You can hear the splashing of puddles in the kickdrums.

Best song that makes you think about Hong Kong?

"囍帖街" by 謝安琪 (Kay Tse) 

Heartbreaking canto-ballad upon first listen, but a close reading of the lyrics show a lament for the teardown of a cultural district in Hong Kong. The music heightens the poetic meaning, metaphors become emotional pleads and questions through the melody. It just doesn't get much more Hong Kong than this, thank you mum for playing me this one.

Best song that makes you think about Bristol?

"All Mine" by Portishead 

All sleazy and smokescreen after dark. If I left Bristol with one new perspective it's of the laid-back, friendly yet dramatic vibe of the city. The band is also a favorite of my first friend in Bristol.

Best song that you have discovered so far in 2025?

"Meridian" by Lyra Pramuk 

She's brilliantly encapsulated a feeling of grief and hopelessness I had touched on with my music, during my most aching teenage years. Then she held the feeling in cinematic stillness, but kept the deep compassion in it. I'm very happy that this upcoming record of mine shares a similar thinking to her album Hymnal.

Best song with a wicked acid bassline?

"Sorry I Make You Lush" by Wagon Christ

The acid isn't the core of the track but it comes in halfway through, and steals the show.
