Recently, Hayes Bradley did a stint of dates opening up for the legendary French electronica act Air. One listen to Audience, the artist’s new record, displays why that was a good call for all parties involved. Bradley, who makes his living making music for indie films and fashion campaigns, has a deft understanding of the sonic dynamics that help to shape 90s-glancing electronic music. The artist even steps on the gas a little bit—on “Dear Treasure,” which features Luna, fuzz bass and breakbeats propel a tune that no doubt has propelled more than a few motorists to go above the speed limit; “Total Call,” the track after it, is a big beat number that would make The Crystal Method proud. That this record is at times cinematic should come as no surprise. It would make a great soundtrack to a coming-of-age movie set in 1998.
