Infinity Gradient, a collaboration between the composer Tristan Perich and the organist James McVinnie, is a majestic display of technologies both ancient and contemporary. The recording, which was performed at London’s Royal Festival Hall, is centered around a pipe organ and 100 speakers cranking out 1-bit audio—two elements that have been longtime hallmarks of the composer. It’s music that marries tradition with an elusive contemporary patina, vaguely recalling everything from drone metal to Terry Riley to primitive video game soundtracks. Through the force of volume and imagination, the organ cuts through the strictures of musical history; we can only imagine how powerful it sounded in the room.
