The East London duo Georgie & Joe’s debut mixtape is a study in the kind of synchronicity that comes from making things together in close quarters—this project was created, according to the artists, in “total isolation.” There is a specific kind of songwriting logic here, one that happens when a couple is operating on their own terms, removed from the rules of the outside world. Musically, this manifests itself as an idiosyncratic pastiche of the past 25 years of electronic pop. Some moments recall the proto-hyperpop of Max Tundra, others a DIY take on chart music of the 2000s. One single, “Touch You,” is a pop song whose musical ground is constantly shifting, in ways subtle and not, around the listener. “Nobody Will Love You” deploys Y2K pop-isms and a great acid bassline. A strong debut, not without hooks.
