Acclaimed Japan “minyo footwork” duo WaqWaq Kingdom - aka Shigeru Ishihara (DJ Scotch Egg / Seefeel) and Kiki Hitomi (ex-King Midas Sound) - connect with UK drone choir NYX for special one-off Christmas collaboration recorded live for BBC radio’s flagship experimental show Late Junction at their legendary Maida Vale studio.
Vividly coloured with the kind of SNES-incantation and cosmic gabba that we have come to expect from WaqWaq Kingdom, this mesmerising collaboration with UK experimental choral musician Sian O’Gorman (aka NYX) is afforded a uniquely haunted and ritualistic bent that dips unexpectedly into folk mythology and the uncanny with deft intentionality. The pair were invited to perform together - a debut meeting - for BBC radio’s legendary late-night experimental show Late Junction by the show’s producer and presenter, Kit Callin and Jennifer Lucy Allen.
Opener “Bamboo Koi Koi” perfectly exhibits this entrancing and hypnotic sense of ecstasy and liturgy threaded into WaqWaq Kingdom’s usual breakneck rhythms and hi-octane energy. Its fourth-motorik-world rhythms shaped by the curiously unpredictable middle ground invoked by two artists in total mastery of different - but evidently complementary - musical galaxies, Hitomi’s voice is a focal point amidst a swirling sea of samples, choral voice, and synthesis.
