The London band Hank’s first EP, Twist Grip, came out last fall and has slowly been garnering some attention. Rightly so: The four songs are heavy, washy pieces of dual-vox rock that obliquely point to indie touchstones past and present in a way that is at once moody and catchy. Beyond the songwriting itself, there is a textural sensitivity in the production and guitar playing here that helps to lift the songs out of the wide middle. In an indie game with no shortage of small, vibe-based projects, Hank points towards a bigger, noisier, rockier vision. The outro of EP closer “RanThruBlue” is built to rip up festival stages and sticky-floored pubs alike.
